Teaching Quality in the School of Life Sciences

In the words of The Sunday Times, "Kingston has established itself ... as one of the country's top teaching universities."

Teaching at universities is regularly assessed and Kingston has achieved high scores across all our faculties.
Twelve subject areas at Kingston, including biosciences and sports science, have been rated 'excellent' by teaching quality inspectors. You can read the inspectors' reports online at www.qaa.ac.uk.

HOW WILL YOU BE TAUGHT?
You learn your chosen subject(s) through lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical classes and field trips. You will be encouraged to develop your study, presentation and communication skills, your ability to work in a team and many other skills that are highly sought after by employers. Project work is an important part of all our courses and may take place within a research team.

BLACKBOARD
A major part of your academic experience at Kingston will be Blackboard, the University's web-based learning management system. You can log to Blackboard at any time via a web browser from any PC that is connected to the Internet. It gives you 24 hour access to lecture materials, practical exercises, powerpoint presentations, revision tests, copies of past exam papers and even video clips that illustrate the topics covered. Reading lists within each Blackboard module are linked to the University's library system, so you can find out if a book is available, and reserve it, from wherever you are studying. Blackboard also helps students and lecturers keep in touch through announcement boards, discussion groups and a virtual classroom facility.

TOP MARKS FOR KINGSTON
In 2000, the School of Life Sciences scored 24 out of 24 points in an independent review of its teaching quality in molecular and organismal bioscience subjects. In 2001 we gained an impressive 22 out of 24 - unofficially rated as 'excellent' - for teaching in our sports science degree. The assessments, carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), looked into every aspect of teaching, including student achievement, resources, exam papers - even the minutes from meetings. Present and past students were interviewed about their reasons for choosing Kingston and their experiences here. The assessors also talked to employers.

The QAA highlighted the following aspects of our teaching: "Coherent, intellectually challenging degree courses... informed by industry and professional practice." "Clear strategy for teaching, learning and assessment, which requires the use of a variety of teaching methods delivered by enthusiastic, approachable staff." "High level of satisfaction with the courses expressed by external examiners, employers and the graduates themselves." "Well-equipped and well-maintained teaching rooms and laboratories." "Comprehensive range of academic and pastoral support, guidance and welfare services provided by the University and the School... and most importantly, the School's happy, pleasant and productive working environment."
