Stories from our Graduates

Jack Davison Graduated with a BSc (with Honours) Geography 2008
"I have many fond memories of my time studying Geography at Kingston. During the first year the daunting thought of meeting new staff and students quickly vanished as I realised how friendly staff were and how sociable my fellow students were too. When I talk to friends who studied Geography at different universities, I realise what a good choice Kingston turned out to be. From the first day to the last day I experienced great times. This is thanks in no small part to the way in which the Geography course is structured, and especially the fieldtrip opportunities which were available. The fieldtrips arranged were very enjoyable. I know that this is a view shared by other students who went on them. I was also particularly surprised by the module choice. I chose to discover areas of Geography which really interested me and the range of options was a big plus. I also won’t forget the enthusiasm of the teaching staff at Kingston and their willingness to help students at every available opportunity. This really helped me to make the most of my time at university. I know that I would never have been as successful if it wasn’t for the expertise and approachability of all of the staff. Studying Geography at Kingston has also taught me many skills which I can use outside of the university environment and apply them to everyday life, such as building my confidence when speaking to groups of people and learning how to work efficiently in a team.  I’d also recommend Kingston as a location. The area is excellent for both younger and older students-the town centre is a safe and enjoyable place to socialise, and with the centre of London 20 minutes away, and the countryside 20 minutes the other, Kingston’s location means that I rarely had nothing to do. I would recommend Kingston to anyone interested in doing a Geography related degree."

Oliver Hall – Graduated with a BSc (with Honours) Geography 2008
"I joined Kingston University in 2005 after one gap year. Even though I commuted I still formed some excellent friendships at the university. This was partly due to the excellent field trips. Geography at Kingston University was a very well organized course. Overall the content of the course was excellent. Over the 3 years we were taken on many field trips. These trips also provided a crucial role in the bond between the lecturers and the students. This bond was something that I think isn't found at many Universities. I really felt like the course leaders genuinely cared about the students not just in their academic achievements, but on a personal level too. Also, the good relationships with the lecturers encouraged openness which only benefitted academic progress. There was always an awesome level of support available and you never felt that you were a burden on the staff. Overall Kingston University has helped me in confidence and employability. I am currently running my own business but I hope that one day I will use some of the material that I was taught at Kingston."

Louise Harrison, Graduated with a BSc (with Honours) Geography 2007
"Choosing to study at Kingston University was a great choice and a fantastic 3 years! My initial interest in Geography developed whilst I was studying for my A-levels. When starting my course at Kingston, my eyes were opened to the vast array of topics that were actually covered by Human Geography. I studied fascinating up-to-date social issues such as racism and homelessness and also international development and the work of Non Governmental Organisations, to name a few. In amongst all of these modules there were opportunities to go on field trips. In all of the trips there was a healthy balance of work and play! Throughout my time at Kingston University I made great friends and had a great deal of support from all of my lecturers whose doors were always open. Kingston University really sparked my interest in social issues and current affairs, so much so that I went on to study for a Masters degree in Geography. I have since chosen a career in teaching in order to communicate my love and enthusiasm for Human Geography to the next generation."
